Want a New Look in Your Home?

June 14th, 2008 MeganCherry Posted in Home Management | No Comments »

Consider a Fresh Coat and Color of Paint for a Facelift. It is not uncommon to want a new look in your home. The same old thing can get very boring after a while, and if you really want to spice things up, there are few ways out there that are more appropriate for such a thing than a fresh coat of paint. A simple paint color should do just fine, but if you ant to get a bit fancier then even some of the faux painting techniques out there should help, like faux leather painting and painting stripes or things of that nature.

Of course, there are a few things that must be done to prepare yourself for the new look in your home, and unfortunately the first part is the hardest. The good thing about that is that once the hard work is done, you get to move on to the good part–putting the color on your walls.

Clear Off Your Walls

When you start the painting process, the first thing that has to be done is to remove everything from the walls and from being up against the walls. Remove coat racks, picture frames, art, any wallpaper, drapes, nails and screws or anything else that may get in the way when it comes to painting your walls. You want to have a smooth, clean and clear surface so be sure that you have everything taken off before you get started. It is easy to look past coat hooks and things that have been on your walls for so long that you forgot they were actually there.

Push Everything Else to the Center of the Room

For homes with bigger, sturdier furniture it can be too much to do for a person to completely rid their room of furniture. For larger rooms, it often helps to push the furniture toward the middle of the room rather than to move it all out so that you can easily paint one wall without having to worry about getting paint on your prized furniture.

Don’t Forget the Drop Cloth

Just because you think you have your things out of the way does not mean that a drop cloth is not necessary. A drop cloth is important for the carpet as well as the furniture, as just a few drops of paint can spoil a whole look and that is not the way you want your d

What is Difference Between California Small Group and Large Group Health Insurance

June 14th, 2008 DennisJarvis Posted in Finances | No Comments »

“Group coverage” is used loosely to describe health insurance plans that are employer sponsored but there is a distinction between “Small Group” and “Large Group” health benefits which is important. Your company’s options can be quite different under these two umbrellas so let’s take a look at the how they differ both in terms of qualification and treatment under the law.

What is “Small Group” in terms of employer-sponsored health insurance In the State of California, Small Group health insurance is essentially employer-sponsored health insurance for companies with 2-50 employees. Eligibility requirements and protection is handled under AB1672.

First, “Guaranteed issue” is a very big advantage to establishing a Group health insurance plan in California versus other States. Regardless of the health of employees enrolling, the carrier must offer coverage to an eligible company. There are requirements that must be met by the company but the big three are 1) 2-50 employees/owners; 2) 75% of the eligible employees must go with the plan; and 3) the employer must pay at least 50% of the employee’s premium (does not mandate dependents). For more information on qualifying for Small Group coverage, please check our page of Small Group enrollment.

The ability of the company to change rates is also very important, especially for companies that have employees with health issues. In California, the carriers can up or down from the standard rate by 10%. This is called the RAF (Risk Adjustment Factor). The size of the group can affect this rate factor since the larger the group are more likely to get a lower RAF. The theory is that health issues are spread among a larger pool of people. It’s not atypical for carriers to offer RAF guarantees based on the size of the enrolling group.

Finally, the health carriers in California designate and file their Small Group plans with State agency responsible. Any eligible group can then apply for the same plan regardless of health. This is important to keep carriers from “cherry picking” healthy groups on to certain plan types and excluding less healthy groups.

How does Large Group health insurance differ?

Officially, large group health insurance is for groups with more than 50 employees/owners. Some carriers may allow groups that were originally designated as Small Group to remain on the Small Group suite of plans if they grow beyond 50 employees but they are not required to. There are some very big differences when comparing Large Group with Small Group described above.

Large group plans are not protected by AB 1672 and are not “guaranteed issue”. The carrier can decline coverage to groups based on claims experience and/or health history. Rates are built for that specific group’s claims experience and risk so total amounts can vary significantly from group to group. The plan options are different from those offered to Small Group and then to offer many more options. Some carriers even offer more of a cafeteria option where employer’s pick specific benefits to offer (i.e. choice of office copay, etc). Some Large group have tailor-made benefits to meet their needs and budget. Large group is quite different from Small Group and contacting an experienced agent is more important than ever when navigating this side of the business.

Water Purification Process Explained - Why You Need To Know

June 14th, 2008 LarryTaylor Posted in Home Management | No Comments »

The goal of the water purification process is to take raw water and use a method to purify or clean it. When you are trying to explain water purification, you have to know the purpose the water will be used for. There are many methods and each is suitable for certain applications.

Mostly water is purified for homes, but there are applications like medical, scientific, industrial and commercial. Each has a water purification process that best suits it. Some of the different methods include, in no particular order, ultra violet light filtration, reverse osmosis, deionization and activated carbon treatment. There are many others, as well.

A complete water purification process will remove a whole host of things including algae, suspended particles of organic material, bacteria, viruses, fungi, minerals and metals. The government sets standards as to how many particles may remain and still be safe for human consumption. If you have to know exactly what contaminants are present, you will have to have a sample tested.

The source is sometimes a factor in which water purification process is best. Obviously we can not name them all, but the source could be a river, stream, lake, spring or well. These are only a few. Knowing the source helps experts to identify potential contaminants and choose the right water purification process to get the job done.

It’s really pretty complicated, but what follows is a brief attempt to explain water purification.

First it is brought in from the source and stored. Then it is cleaned of big debris, tree limbs, for example. Then, it is preconditioned and pre chlorinated. The ph levels are adjusted to and the water is flocculated. Flocculation means “to make clear”.

The water purification process continues with sedimentation, slow moving storage and filtration. To explain water purification, is to look at it as a series of steps, each one cleaning more contaminants than the last.

There are a number of different filtration methods that complete the water purification process. Granulated carbon, reverse osmosis, ion exchange, electro-deionization and direct contact membrane distillation are some of them. The water purification process used by your treatment facility may vary. But, in general, this should explain water purification at the treatment center’s end.

In order to pass EPA standards, facilities are required to test for contaminants. The allowable levels are relatively high, many experts feel. The reason is that the standards are based on what would be toxic to a 175 pound adult. So, children could still become ill. Anyone who weighs less than 175 pounds could be in danger. I always worry about my dogs.

In my area, chlorine is used to keep the pipes clean and at certain times of the year, the levels are very high. When our treatment facility tries to explain water purification, they say that the levels are safe and that it is necessary to “flush” the system on a yearly basis, usually in the spring. Whenever this occurs, all three of my dogs develop diarrhea, unless I filter their drinking water.

It has become necessary to consider the treatment facility as only part of a complete water purification process. In the home, we have to do our share to protect ourselves, our families and even our pets.

Transplanting Roses – Tips For Success

June 14th, 2008 K.Finch Posted in Gardening | No Comments »

When is the best time to transplant roses? This is one of the most common questions asked by novice gardeners and one of the most popular topics discussed by dedicated Rosarians. There are no right or wrong answers and any experience gardener will have his or her own rules regarding this based on experience. There are general guidelines offering good advice for novices to follow, which can give successful results. However, it is a good idea to keep a record of the dates when you transplant your roses and observe their progress. This will give you a clear indication of which is the best time for you, to transplant your roses given the type of climate you live in.

For generally guidance, the best time to transplant roses is during a time when they are dormant. In northern climates this period falls at the end of the winter season. In a warmer climate transplanting can take place in late autumn or winter

Exposed roots can be transplanted any time as long as the temperature is above freezing level. Rose transplants will not survive if they are subjected to 10 degrees below 0 F. Container grown roses can be transplanted at any time of year but Spring is best, this will give the roots chance to spread and strengthen themselves before the winter sets in.

It is possible, although it goes against the general rule, for you to transplant roses before they become dormant. It isn’t always necessary to wait, if you don’t want to, you can transplant at any time during the growing season even during the height of summer.

If you cannot wait until the growing season to transplant your roses then you will need to put some safety measures into place to ensure your roses survive the ordeal. Before you transplant during the growing season, please follow these steps.

1) On the day before you plan to transplant your roses, give them plenty of water, making sure the roots are thoroughly wet; this will protect the roots and help them survive

2) Choose and prepare the ground before hand, making sure the area is in a sunny position. The soil needs to be enriched and nourished with plenty of peat and organic fertilizer.

3) Transplant your roses as soon as you take them from the ground. It is vital that the roots are not subjected to sunlight and dry air. If this isn’t possible, keep the roses in a cool dark place, never expose to sunlight or heat, as this will damage your roses irreparably.

4) When you have successfully transplanted your roses you must water them thoroughly. Roses need constant watering during the growing season especially if they are adapting to new ground. Never let the soil get too dry, especially in the height of Summer.

5) There is no need to add any further fertilizer until you see new growth. If you add fertilizer too soon, before the roots have settled, you risk damaging them. The fertilizer may be too strong for the roots at this time. Remember, your roses have just experienced a traumatic disturbance during transplantation.

If your roses are not at their best and are beginning to wilt do not replant them during the growing season, otherwise you risk damaging them further, and they will not survive.

Roses are one of the most beautiful and aromatic plants that you could have in your garden. To obtain the maximum from your roses make sure you choose their location carefully. A well-positioned rose, which receives at least six hours sunshine everyday, plenty of air circulation, is in a reasonable quality soil which is not too waterlogged can produce the most beautiful flowers. As long as they are protected from freezing temperatures, have plenty of space for root growth and not overshadowed by other plants they will continue to grow year after year and give you the most amazing results and beautiful roses.

Watering Roses – Tips For Successful Blooms

June 14th, 2008 K.Finch Posted in Gardening | No Comments »

It‘s not always easy to attain beauty and accomplish perfection, but by following basic guidelines you can ensure a beautiful show of roses. One of the basic tips is to learn how and when to water your roses and keep in mind there are good times and bad times. So to encourage your roses and reward yourself with the best display ever, all year round, just follow these simple steps:

Morning Dew

We all know how wonderful it is first thing in the morning, when the fresh due has settled and everything is coming alive before the sun becomes too warm. This is the best time to water your roses, so they are fresh and prepared for the heat of the day. If you leave it until later, the sun will evaporate most of the water, leaving little chance for it to reach the roots. If you water in the evening the coolness will keep your plant damp, the leaves will stay wet which can cause mildew. However, not all of us are awake with the lark and able begin our watering regime that early. If you can’t water early, do it as soon as you can. If it’s early evening, try not to get the leaves too wet, just concentrate on the roots of the roses. The leaves will take care of themselves by taking in natural moisture from the evening air, keeping them free from mildew, insects, pets and fungal diseases, which can all damage roses.

Hazy Heat

Roses are well known for being thirsty and it’s only a dedicated gardener who can keep up with the constant routine, but gardeners will be the first to tell you, that all the hard work and perseverance really does pay off. Roses on the whole require between 1 and 2 inches of water each week, one simple way of measuring rainfall is to invest in a rainwater gauge. You can then add the extra amount of water as needed to make up the 1 to 2 inches. The type of climate and soil that you have will determine the amount of water your roses consume. This is where your previous hard work pays off, by watering your plants well in spring you will have made your plants hardy and held them in good stead for the hot dry days of summer. You do need to be aware of the warning signs that not all is well and to keep these in mind when observing your roses. If the leaves are beginning to wilt then they probably just need their thirst quenching. If they are turning yellow and starting to drop off then that’s a sign you are over watering and the plant is unable to breathe the oxygen because of water saturation.

It is also important you check for adequate drainage or ground that is not level, roses like a lot of water, but they don’t like standing in puddles, so be mindful not to get carried away with the water hose.

Start at the bottom

The golden rule to remember is to always start watering at base of the plant where most of the energy and development takes place. The roots need to be healthy and strong to help the roses grow. The plants will take moisture from the air and draw from the roots. One way to ensure a constant water supply is to set up a drip feed or hose to irrigate the soil. Rose plants could receive approximately 1 to 2 gallons of water per foot per hour, according to the type of hose and pressure of your water supply. You could set up a timer to turn the water on and off at intervals during the day, very useful when you haven’t the time to water or have to be somewhere else.

No Pests Allowed

To prevent pests from destroying your roses it’s a good idea to spray every two or three days with just a fine mist of water, check your hose for a fine setting. A good quick wash will keep insects at bay but not enough to encourage mildew. Take care to flush the inside of the foliage where pests can collect. If you can do this early in the day it will give the leaves time to dry before the sun goes down and the temperature cools.

Man, That Stinks!

June 14th, 2008 JeremyJones Posted in Finances | No Comments »

It seemed like everything was going so good too, now this happens. It stinks. I mean it really sucks!

You know all you see on the news negative reports about the economy and the housing gas prices going up and all these problems, right? But I wasn’t worried. I had a good job that paid me plenty of money. I could easily make my car payments on my new Lexus, my wife didn’t have to work, my two kids just started first grade (yes, they are twins), and things were just going well, and now this.

I won’t mention names but it won’t be too hard to figure out. There are several large corporations that are laying off people by the tens of thousands and shutting down production plants. I actually didn’t work for one of these companies but I did supply them with parts and now they don’t have any need for those parts.

To top it off, my boss got in a car accident and since things were looking bleak anyway they decided to offer us the option of leaving the company, or accepting a 33% pay cut! I opted for the latter and now I am hurting. I turned in my Lexus for a six-year-old used car with lesser payments but I still have to make some payments on the Lexus for a couple of months to cover the deficit.

I started one of these home-based business things to try to get things going but they are just not what they seem to be. They make all kinds of promises of instant cash but all I’ve seen is instantly going out of my wallet. I tried another one, and then another one and I’m actually making a couple of bucks, but it’s nothing like they promised.

But here’s the kicker-after all that, my car got towed because it was illegally parked. In order to save money I had canceled every possible aspect on my insurance, including towing. Because they ended up towing it over 25 miles, I needed to come up with 275 bucks to get my car back!

How am I going to get a loan for $275? It was a stupid thing to go to the bank and ask them, they just laughed at me. I didn’t want to call my father-in-law because it would look really stupid. My credit cards are already maxed out and I don’t get paid for two more weeks. Try living without a car for two weeks!

I did the only thing I could figure out to do-get a payday loan. I was nervous about doing this because I’ve heard all kinds of bad things about interest rates and everything. But my experience wasn’t that bad. I went to this company: www.QuickPaydayLending.com and they found someone in my area to loan me the money. They were very up front with the rules and regulations and wanted to make sure I was using this for emergency purposes only. There were no high-pressure tactics and it was all very professional.

I had the money I needed in my bank account in less than eight hours. Normally they go from as little as one hour to as much 24 hours but I was glad to get it in eight. I got my car back and got back to work. As soon as my paycheck came two weeks later my loan was paid off and only cost me about 35 bucks (your rate might be different). I did not have to tell my family and I did not have to put it on a credit card. Phooey on the banks anyway, I’ll never go there again as it was a waste of time.

My experience turned out to be quite good. In fact I think things are looking up because if I hadn’t done that, I would’ve probably lost my job altogether. Now I don’t recommend someone using a payday loan for anything other than emergencies, but in some cases they can be the best thing there is. In fact in some cases are the only thing you can do.

They don’t do credit checks on you, but they also don’t help you with your credit either so don’t be fooled. I didn’t have to fax in any documentation and did it all online, in total privacy. Best of all my confidence back.

Maybe I should approach the owners about becoming a manager of this branch. You know what? I’m going to do it!

Home Security: Basics of Protecting Your Home From Crime

June 14th, 2008 Susan-JaneFrank Posted in Home Management | No Comments »

It can be a nightmare scenario. You return to your home only to find it to be in shambles with most of your home’s valuable gone. You feel violated and sick to your stomach. But it does not have to be that way. Preventing a burglar from breaking into your home and making off with your things can be done simply by practicing and implementing a well-thought-out plan. While there is no security system that is one hundred percent effective against a determined thief, this guide can help dissuade the amateur criminal which is the most frequent offender.

The first step in any home security planning is to survey your property inside and out to look for security risks that are obvious or stand-out. For instance, are there any open or unlocked windows that are easily accessible from the ground? When you are away make sure all doors and windows are closed and locked.

Are your valuables or high ticket items easily visible from the street? Computers, digital cameras, hi-def televisions, cash and jewelry are always hot on the list of stolen items. Avoid having these items too close to windows if possible and close your blinds or drapes when you leave the home. The old saying “out of sight, out of mind” applies here.

Second, take a look at the surroundings of your home. Are there areas around your house, especially close to windows and doors, that are not easily visible from the street or by neighbors? Hidden areas on your property can allow burglars to take their time trying to gain access. These areas may need additional security measures on the windows and doors. Having a fenced yard will help to keep criminals from being able to casually scope-out all your homes potential entrances. Just remember, having a privacy fence is private for you but also for a thief as well. If you back door has a deadbolt then use it.

Is your neighborhood at a higher risk of being burglarized? Homes that back onto ravines or woodlands, are close to subway stations, or are on corners tend to be bigger targets as they provide easier escape routes for thieves. This does not mean that you should avoid buying these types of properties, but just that you need to be aware and take extra precautions.

If you have just moved into a new home, take the time to walk the neighborhood and make a habit of it. This will allow you to not only get to know your neighbors but also start to recognize the faces of the people in your area. If someone does not belong in your community you will be able to spot them more easily. It might even be an opportunity to organize a neighborhood watch.

Making a checklists of all of the things you need to do to make your home more secure will help and ensure that you do not overlook any important details. You can also speak to your local police department. They will usually have a list of tips for you and provide you with information on specific things to watch out for in your community.

Securing your home will not only help protect your home but also your family. By following a few simple measures you can make your home less appealing to thieves and less likely that you will become a victim of burglary.
